You can buy shelves at any big box home renovation store as well as lots of other places. If you are on a constrained budget, that is probably the way to go. But if you want a room that is rich, elegant and quality crafted, there is nothing better than a custom built in wall unit. There is no such thing as a "standard" room. Show me the same room from three identical houses and I can guarantee you that the dimensions for each room will be different. In fact, not only will the dimensions vary considerably, it is also quite likely that the walls are not square and any factory produced shelving unit will have lots of gaps and angles where things do not match. Also, most commercially made shelves are cheap laminate and may look good on the showroom floor but will soon look tattered, worn and chipped. These library shelves were custom built to exactly fit in the space and was adjusted to compensate for the inevitable misalignment of the walls and floor. The main casings were made from oak laminated plywood that was edged with solid oak. The handy storage spaces at the bottom have custom carved doors with a classic shield and lion motif. Carvings were also done along the top valence and this theme was also mirrored on the valence above the window. Finished in durable spar varnish, these shelves will continue to look great for many decades to come.
